began a Sheffield-based cutlery workshop in 1774. His son, Joseph, joined the business, and his four great grandsons altered its name to Mappin Brothers Ltd. The youngest great grandson, a 22-year John Mappin broke free of the Mappin Brothers brand to start the business, Mappin & Company.
